Earendel (WHL0137-LS) is a zā6.2 source discovered with Hubble in 2022 and initially reported as the most distant known star thanks to extreme gravitational lensing by a foreground galaxy cluster. Follow-up JWST observations and later analyses indicate it is more likely a compact, metal-poor star cluster or cluster progenitor rather than a single star, though its magnification and exact nature remain debated.
